Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to Enhance Ocean Science Research in Portugal

The Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology, and Innovation in Madeira Island has partnered with the UK’s National Oceanography Centre to acquire two Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (ALRs) for marine research. These underwater robotics will enhance ocean research capabilities in Portugal and beyond, allowing for data collection at depths of up to 6,000m over weeks to months. One vehicle will focus on oceanography and biogeochemistry of the water column, while the other will be used for seabed mapping.

The partnership with ARDITI marks a milestone for NOC, as it expands the use of its ALRs internationally and furthers the development of the vehicles through funding and collaboration. Madeira Island’s unique location in the Atlantic Ocean makes it an ideal spot for deep-sea exploration, with waters quickly deepening to over 1,000m close to the shore.

ARDITI’s Principal Scientist, Rui Caldeira, highlights the importance of the NOC underwater vehicles in advancing research, technological development, and innovation in the region. The data gathered by these vehicles will support research initiatives, help enforce EU Directives, and attract international partners for deep-sea testing.

The ALRs have been designed for easy operation with a common open-source operating system, allowing for the integration of various sensors for different research applications. The agreement with ARDITI is part of NOC’s plan to expand its fleet of ALRs by 2026, providing more opportunities for marine research organizations in the UK and abroad to access these advanced underwater robotics.
