A federal judge has paused a child sexual abuse case involving Linda McMahon, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for education secretary, and WWE co-founders Vince McMahon and Linda McMahon. The Maryland lawsuit, filed by former ringside crew members who were teens at the time, alleges that the McMahons turned a blind eye to years of sexual abuse of underage “ring boys” by company executives. The McMahons have denied the claims.
The case has been put on hold pending a ruling by the Maryland Supreme Court on the Child Victims Act of 2023. The Act could repeal the statute of limitations on civil actions related to child sexual abuse, including any other sexual conduct that is a crime.
Linda McMahon, who is seeking confirmation for the education secretary position, has been meeting with senators as her lack of experience in education is debated. The lawsuit comes at a critical time for McMahon’s confirmation. Her attorney has dismissed the allegations as baseless, citing a previous FBI investigation that found no grounds for further action.
The defendants in the case have requested a stay, arguing that a ruling on the CVA’s constitutionality is crucial in the case involving alleged abuse from decades ago. A decision from the Maryland Supreme Court is expected in 2025.
The allegations could potentially impact McMahon’s confirmation for the cabinet position, with Senator Kevin Cramer stating that evidence of a cover-up would be a significant concern. The plaintiffs have not yet responded to requests for comment.
