Law enforcement agencies in North Dakota will be increasing patrols from Nov. 1 to Dec. 12 to enforce the state’s primary seat belt law as part of the Click It or Ticket campaign. The initiative aims to reduce fatalities on North Dakota roadways by encouraging seat belt use. Data shows that 47% of crash fatalities in 2023 in the state involved individuals who were not wearing seat belts. Under the primary seat belt law, officers can issue citations to drivers and passengers solely for not wearing a seat belt.
Seat belts are the most effective safety device in reducing the risk of death and injury in motor vehicle crashes. Unbelted occupants account for a large percentage of fatalities, while those wearing seat belts are more likely to escape with non-serious or no injuries. Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger emphasized the importance of buckling up for every trip to increase chances of survival and decrease the risk of serious injury in the event of a crash.
The Click It or Ticket campaign is part of the state’s Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries on North Dakota roadways. It is crucial for drivers and passengers to prioritize wearing seat belts to protect themselves and others while on the road.
