Hassan, a 23-year-old resident of Deir al-Zahrani in south Lebanon, narrowly escaped death as Israeli warplanes bombed his town, prompting him and his family to flee to Beirut. The bombings, part of a wider conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, resulted in the deadliest day for Lebanon in almost 50 years. With over 1,200 deaths in September alone, the toll exceeded that of the 2006 war between the two parties.
As the violence escalated, thousands of displaced people sought refuge in Beirut, where makeshift shelters were set up in schools and other public spaces to accommodate them. Despite the overwhelming chaos and trauma, individuals and organizations rallied together to provide necessities like food, water, mattresses, and medical assistance to those in need.
