Former Harvard Women’s Hockey coach Katey Stone has filed a lawsuit against the university for sex discrimination, claiming that she was forced out following reports of misconduct she denies. Stone, who coached the team for 27 seasons, resigned in June 2023 amid allegations of a toxic culture in the program, including insensitive remarks, body shaming, and hazing incidents. The lawsuit alleges that Stone was held to a higher standard of behavior than male coaches and was unfairly treated in comparison.
Stone denies any involvement in the hazing incidents described by former players and alleges that they acted out of personal vendettas. She also accuses Harvard of gender-based pay discrimination, claiming she was paid significantly less than the men’s hockey coach. The lawsuit seeks $5 million in damages from the university and from the individuals accused of defaming her.
The complaint also highlights examples of misconduct by male coaches at Harvard that were not punished, suggesting a double standard in how male and female coaches are treated. Stone was a successful coach, leading her team to multiple Frozen Fours appearances and NCAA Title games over her tenure. Harvard has not commented on the ongoing litigation.
