Creators of Deepfake videos are selling nonconsensual videos on hidden websites

Fake sexually explicit deepfake videos of celebrity women are still being bought using Visa and Mastercard credit cards despite the credit card companies prohibiting such transactions. Fan-Topia is a subscription website that offers nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes of celebrities, allowing subscribers to pay for material with credit cards or cryptocurrency. After facing scrutiny and shutting down major accounts following a news article, deepfake accounts on Fan-Topia have resurfaced using hidden links to facilitate payments and hide content creators. These deepfakes primarily target women and girls, featuring public figures, schoolgirls, and even political figures. The hidden links system acts as a paywall between creators’ profiles on free websites and Fan-Topia subscription pages, allowing for access to longer versions of the content for a fee.

Despite Visa and Mastercard’s rules prohibiting the purchase of nonconsensual sexual content, transactions on Fan-Topia continue. The company behind Fan-Topia, OSOMR Ltd., is based in the U.K. and has been operational since 2021. With the introduction of the “hidemylink” service, deepfake creators have found a new level of security and protection, allowing them to continue operating even as government efforts to criminalize deepfake creation intensify. Legislation against nonconsensual deepfakes in the U.S. has not yet passed, leaving creators to potentially move to more hidden corners of the internet. Despite the challenges and scrutiny, deepfake creators continue to operate and offer content to subscribers, often using social media platforms to stay connected with fans.
