North Dakota offers Tree City USA program – Jamestown Sun

The Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program has been recognizing cities since 1976 for their efforts in creating and maintaining tree cover. Over 3,500 cities, from small towns to major metropolises, have been empowered to prioritize urban forestry. In North Dakota, 50 communities have earned the Tree City USA designation, including Jamestown. Five of these communities have also received Growth Awards for their sustainable forestry programs. Additionally, four higher education institutions in the state have been recognized as Tree Campuses. Becoming a Tree City provides various benefits, such as recognition for urban forestry management, education on tree care practices, and increased community pride. Gackle, North Dakota, recently joined the Tree City USA roster and has been actively working on enhancing its parks and community through tree planting initiatives. Arbor Day celebrations will be taking place statewide this spring, and communities interested in joining the program can contact North Dakota Community Forestry staff for more information.
