Former North Dakota Lt. Gov. Brent Sanford has been appointed as the interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System. The State Board of Higher Education made the decision during a special board meeting, with Sanford set to take over from Mark Hagerott, who moved up his retirement to April 29.
Sanford, who previously served as lieutenant governor under Gov. Doug Burgum for six years, has been serving as interim president of Bismarck State College since January. He will officially start his new role as chancellor on April 30.
In a statement, Sanford expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to lead all of the state’s higher education campuses. He emphasized his readiness for the challenge and his commitment to promoting collaboration among the campuses for systemwide initiatives and addressing workforce challenges in a timely manner.
With his experience in state government and education leadership roles, Sanford is well-positioned to guide the North Dakota University System during this transitional period.
