University of West Alabama introduces new Forestry Technology Program to broaden academic offerings

The University of West Alabama is introducing a new associate degree program in forestry technology to meet the demands of Alabama’s timber-rich Black Belt region. Developed by forestry instructor Sidney Freeman, the curriculum combines classroom instruction, fieldwork, and advanced technological training to prepare students for success in the forestry industry. The program, which will be available starting fall 2025, emphasizes practical skills and offers internship opportunities to bridge the gap between education and employment.

Freeman, a UWA alumna with a background in environmental science and forestry, has strong industry connections that will help students secure internships and future job opportunities. The program also offers a pathway to a bachelor’s degree in conservation and field biology, providing additional opportunities for students to advance in their careers.

In addition to the new degree program, UWA will host the Alabama Certified Burn Manager certification course for the first time in the region, solidifying the university’s reputation as a leader in forestry education. Freeman believes that graduates of the program will be well-equipped for various careers in forestry and natural resource management, including forest management, timber harvesting, and geospatial technology for land management.

With the demand for skilled forestry professionals on the rise, Freeman highlights the importance of hands-on experience and industry connections in preparing students for successful careers in forestry. UWA’s new forestry technology program is set to provide students with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in the evolving forestry industry.
