Two American citizens held in custody in Denmark for two weeks following altercation with Uber driver

Two U.S. citizens were arrested and charged with assault in Copenhagen, Denmark after an altercation with an Uber driver last month. The family of one of the men, Owen Ray, said that he is now unable to leave the country after being detained for two weeks. The U.S. State Department is aware of the situation and is providing consular assistance to the citizens. The parents of Owen Ray stated that their son and a friend were the victims of an unprovoked verbal and physical assault by the Uber driver.

On the night of the incident, Ray and his friend got into an Uber but realized they had put in the wrong address. When they attempted to cancel the ride and get out of the car, the driver demanded to be paid, leading to a confrontation. The altercation was captured on the Uber’s dash cam video, which is being used as evidence in legal proceedings in Denmark.

Ray was detained and brought before a court, where he was charged with common assault and sentenced to pre-trial detention. He was released from prison, but Danish authorities have confiscated his passport, preventing his return to the United States. If convicted, the citizens could face fines or imprisonment for up to three years under Danish law. Ray’s parents are urging Danish officials to allow him to return home without delay, stating that he is the victim in this case.
