The North Dakota Legislature recently passed a bill that would require physicians to watch an educational video on the state’s pro-life laws at least two years before performing an abortion, aimed at increasing protections for life in the state. The bill, known as HB 1511, outlines regulations for when and how abortions can be legally performed in the state, including restrictions on partial-birth abortions. The final draft of the bill is awaiting Republican Governor Kelly Armstrong’s signature. The bill allocates funds for an experienced OB/GYN to develop the educational video for physicians, which must be approved by the state’s Attorney General. Currently, hospitals are the only places where women can legally obtain abortions in North Dakota, as the state’s only abortion provider left after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. The North Dakota Supreme Court is also reviewing a pro-life law that protects life after six weeks of pregnancy. Governor Armstrong, who is publicly pro-life, has been supportive of measures to protect unborn life in the state.
