Colome leads the way in the revival of six-man football in South Dakota – Mitchell Republic

Colome High School in South Dakota is exploring the possibility of introducing six-man football to the state’s high school athletics catalog. The school’s activities director, Kathy Hrabanek, recently held an informational meeting with representatives from several small schools to discuss the feasibility of the idea. Topics ranged from travel concerns to potential rule alterations, with the primary goal being to inform and engage interested parties in the discussion.

Colome, one of the smallest programs in Class 9B, has faced challenges with roster size and the inability to form a cooperative with neighboring school districts. Last fall, the team had to forfeit a game due to a lack of available players. Despite these challenges, Hrabanek believes that some high schools may consider six-man football as an option.

With a current male-only average daily membership of 10, Colome is one of the smallest schools in the state with a standalone football program. Hrabanek believes that the South Dakota High School Activities Association may be open to considering a proposal for six-man football if all factors align correctly.

Neighboring states such as Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wyoming already have six-man football divisions. Hrabanek is hopeful that South Dakota will also explore this option to provide opportunities for schools with smaller student populations. As discussions continue, the future of six-man football in South Dakota remains uncertain, but there is interest and potential for growth in this area.
