Pawsability Dog Club in Brooklyn is making a difference during Autism Acceptance Month by providing job training for autistic and neurodivergent adults in the dog care industry. The nonprofit doggy daycare has been offering free job training for three years, with 40% of its staff being autistic or neurodivergent individuals. The club’s mission is to support these individuals by exposing them to different career paths in the pet care industry and helping them find work afterward.
Executive Director Jillian Forman was inspired to start the program after seeing loved ones struggle to find employment after high school. By pairing individuals with dogs, the program aims to provide a comfortable and fulfilling work environment that reduces anxiety and allows individuals to be their full selves. Participants like Emaly Serrano and Michael Tonns have found solace and joy in working with the dogs, with Serrano expressing gratitude for the opportunity to pursue her passion.
Pawsability Dog Club is currently hosting a fundraiser for those interested in supporting their cause. Donations can also be made to help continue providing job training and support for autistic and neurodivergent individuals in the pet care industry.
