House Passes North Dakota Public Charter Schools Bill, Returning to Senate

The North Dakota House has approved a bill to establish public charter schools in the state, with a 64-29 vote in favor of the legislation. These schools would be subject to the same regulations as public schools but operate independently of school districts, overseen by their own governing boards. The bill’s sponsor believes that struggling rural schools could potentially reorganize as public charters. However, these schools would not be allowed to charge tuition, teach religious curriculum, or access state school building funds. Republican Rep. Ben Koppelman of West Fargo emphasized the importance of parent involvement and engagement in education, and sees public charter schools as providing another option for families. The bill will now head back to the Senate for approval of the House’s amendments before potentially being signed into law by the governor.
