North Dakota House approves simplified legislation to aid struggling ambulance services

The North Dakota House of Representatives has passed a bill to support distressed ambulance services in response to increasing instances of ambulance service failures, particularly in rural areas. Senate Bill 2033 aims to provide guidance and support to designated distressed ambulance services and requires them to come up with a plan to address their issues. The bill was heavily amended by the House, reducing its cost from $150,000 to $7,000. The amended bill now includes the creation of a “distressed ambulance workgroup” comprising of various stakeholders to develop emergency medical services plans and determine if a distressed ambulance service’s license needs to be downgraded. If a downgrade occurs, the service area would be divided among adjacent ambulance services. The bill passed in the House with an 83-10 vote and will now go back to the Senate for a concurrence vote before potentially heading to a conference committee or the governor for further action. The goal is to address the challenges faced by distressed ambulance services and ensure proper emergency medical services for communities in need.
