A bill aimed at creating a special task force to handle missing persons cases on reservations is one step closer to being enacted in North Dakota. The North Dakota Senate recently passed House Bill 1199, which establishes a 10-person group to enhance search efforts for missing Indigenous individuals. This task force will include state officials as well as a member from each of the five tribes within the state.
The bill received overwhelming support in both chambers, with the House voting 73-12 in favor back in February and the Senate passing it 46-1 on Monday, albeit with some amendments. The legislation will now go back to the House for further consideration.
This initiative is a crucial step in addressing the issue of missing persons on reservations and signals a collaborative effort between state officials and tribal representatives. With the creation of this task force, it is hoped that missing persons cases will receive the attention and resources needed for effective resolution.
