North Dakota lawmakers reject time-change bill

In a recent decision by the state Senate, North Dakotans will continue to change their clocks twice a year as the bill to eliminate seasonal time changes has been defeated. The original bill, House Bill 1259, called for year-round standard time but was amended just before the vote to put the state on year-round daylight saving time instead. The amendment was made in consideration of the benefits of daylight saving time for evening recreation and construction projects that cannot start before 7 a.m.

Some concerns were raised about North Dakota being on a different time schedule than its neighboring states, prompting the amendment to only take effect if neighboring states also dropped the time change. Senator Michael Dwyer argued against the bill, suggesting that any changes should be left up to Congress or neighboring states in the future.

The decision to not eliminate seasonal time changes in North Dakota comes as a relief to many who see the benefits of daylight saving time, particularly in the realm of outdoor activities and construction. While the debate over time changes may continue, for now North Dakotans will continue to adjust their clocks twice a year.
