NFL owners delay decision on prohibiting ‘tush push’ move

NFL team owners decided to postpone the vote on Green Bay’s proposal to ban the tush push play until May. In the meantime, they approved changes to the kickoff rule, expanding replay assist, revising overtime rules, and other modifications. The league is seeking more information on the safety of the play after hearing arguments from both sides and concerns from medical experts.

Changes that did pass include matching regular-season overtime rules with playoffs, allowing both teams to possess the ball in overtime, and making overtime 10 minutes instead of 15. Replay assist can now be used to consult on-field officials to overrule objective calls such as penalties, with certain conditions. The dynamic kickoff rule becomes permanent, moving touchbacks to the 35-yard line.

Despite no reported injuries from the tush push, concerns about player safety have led to discussions on potentially banning the play. Some coaches like Sean McDermott of the Bills are leading the push to eliminate it, citing added force and player posture as potential risks. The Eagles popularized the play in 2022, leading to more teams using it but not achieving the same success rate.

While the future of the tush push remains uncertain, the league is prioritizing player safety as they navigate potential rule changes. The debate on the play’s safety will continue as more information is gathered.
