ICE confirms that University of Minnesota student lost visa due to drunk driving, not protesting

A University of Minnesota graduate student was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) due to a prior DUI conviction, not for being involved in protests, according to federal officials. The Department of Homeland Security clarified that the student’s arrest was related to a visa revocation by the State Department because of a criminal history involving driving under the influence. The lack of an official explanation for the student’s detention led to student protests and concerns from university and political leaders.

Similarly, a student from Minnesota State University Mankato was also detained by ICE without any clear reason provided. University President Edward Inch expressed concern over the situation and contacted elected officials for assistance in stopping such activities within their student community. U.S. Sen. Tina Smith expressed worry about ICE detaining students without proper explanations or due process, advocating for more transparency and accountability.

Both universities have not disclosed the names or details of the detained students to respect their privacy. The Trump administration has been using visa revocation as a basis for detaining individuals with ties to universities, including those who have supported Palestinian causes during protests related to Israel’s conflict in Gaza. Governor Tim Walz emphasized the importance of following due process rights for all individuals in the country, regardless of the circumstances.ICE did not immediately respond to requests for further details on the cases, adding to the growing concern over the lack of transparency in these detainments.
