Maddia Groff threw her second perfect game of the season, leading the Omaha Mavericks to a 2-0 victory over North Dakota. Despite chilly temperatures and misty conditions, Groff struck out 13 batters in the dominant performance at Connie Claussen Field in Omaha. This marked Groff’s first career seven-inning perfect game, with her first perfect outing coming in a three-inning appearance the day before where she recorded a total of 20 strikeouts.
Omaha’s offense supported Groff with Sydney Thomason hitting a solo home run in the first inning and Katherine Johnson adding another solo homer in the sixth. Sammy Schmidt contributed a single for the Mavericks’ only other hit in the game, which allowed Groff’s perfect game bid to stay alive.
In the seventh inning, there was a close call when North Dakota’s Katie Joten seemed to break up the perfect game with an infield hit, but the call was overturned upon review. Joten was ruled out of the box, and Groff eventually secured the final out with a fly ball.
Up next, the Mavericks will face the Creighton Bluejays on Tuesday before heading for a three-game series against North Dakota State starting Saturday. Groff’s impressive pitching and the team’s offensive support have positioned Omaha as a strong contender heading into these upcoming matchups.
