ICE Agent Found in Contempt and Case Dismissed Midtrial After Defendant’s Detention

A man named William Martell Lebron was detained by ICE agents during his criminal trial on charges of providing false information on a license application. The judge dismissed the case citing prosecutorial misconduct, finding the ICE agent in contempt of court. Defense attorney Murat Erkan accused the state of obstruction of justice and alleged a plan to deport his client.

The Suffolk District Attorney’s Office expressed surprise and dismay at ICE’s actions, stating that they were dedicated to pursuing ethical prosecutions to hold offenders accountable. They immediately contacted ICE and requested Lebron’s return to court, filing a motion for his appearance at trial. The district attorney’s office denied any knowledge of an attempt to prevent Lebron from exercising his right to a trial.

Lebron’s lawyer claimed that prosecutors were aware of ICE’s plans to take his client into custody but did not inform him. ICE stated Lebron was a Dominican national using an alias. A judge ordered ICE to return Lebron to court for trial on Monday.

This incident highlights the tension between state prosecutions and federal immigration enforcement. The case raises questions about the handling of criminal trials involving individuals targeted by ICE and the impact on defendants’ rights.
