Jury rules Greenpeace must pay more than $660 million in case related to Dakota Access protest activities

Environmental organization, Greenpeace, has been ordered to pay over $660 million in damages to the pipeline company Energy Transfer for defamation and other claims related to protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline’s construction. Greenpeace USA was found liable for all counts, while Greenpeace International and Greenpeace Fund Inc. were found liable for some.

The damages will be divided among the three entities, with Greenpeace USA being responsible for the majority of the amount. Despite the verdict, Greenpeace remains committed to their work and plans to appeal the decision. The organization’s senior legal adviser emphasized that the fight against Big Oil will continue.

Energy Transfer hailed the verdict as a win for Americans who distinguish between free speech and breaking the law. The case stems from protests in 2016 and 2017 against the Dakota Access Pipeline, which the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe views as a threat to their water supply. The pipeline, which transports a significant portion of the country’s daily oil production, has been a source of controversy and protests for years.
