Trump signs executive order to dismantle Voice of America and other agencies

President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at reducing the operations of the parent of U.S. government-funded media outlet Voice of America and six other federal agencies in an effort to shrink bureaucracy. The order instructs these agencies to reduce their operations to the minimum required by law. Former news anchor Kari Lake was appointed as the director of Voice of America, who is known for accusing mainstream media of anti-Trump bias.

Voice of America, an international media broadcaster operating in over 40 languages, is overseen by the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which also funds other media outlets like Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia. The order also targets other agencies such as the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services for cuts.

Trump’s order is part of his efforts to remake the federal bureaucracy, which has included potential cuts of over 100,000 jobs among other measures like freezing foreign aid and canceling programs and contracts. Some Republicans have criticized VOA and other publicly-funded media outlets for bias against conservatives, with Elon Musk also calling for the shutdown of VOA and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. In a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Lake expressed a belief that VOA could be improved rather than completely dismantled.
