LA officials warn residents in wildfire-affected areas to evacuate before heavy rain

The Los Angeles Fire Department issued evacuation warnings for areas affected by recent wildfires ahead of heavy rain and mudslides expected later in the week. The Palisades and Eaton fires burned through 40,000 acres and scorched 15,000 buildings in January. The upcoming storms in Southern California increase the risk of mudslides in these areas. Residents are urged to be aware of the danger and to prepare for potential debris flows. Sierra Madre Fire Chief warned that if a mudflow occurs, emergency crews may not be able to reach those trapped for days. Residents are advised to sign up for emergency alerts, listen to local media, and create an emergency household plan. The LAFD also recommends restocking supplies in case of flood, mudslide, or storm damage. The warnings will remain in place until Thursday evening. The Palisades and Eaton fires were fueled by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds and killed at least 29 people. Both fires were fully contained on Jan. 31 after more than three weeks of firefighting efforts.
