Teenage suspect arrested following fatal shooting of police officer and injury of another in New Jersey incident


A 14-year-old suspect was taken into custody on murder charges after a shootout with Newark, New Jersey, police officers, resulting in one officer dead and another hospitalized. The incident occurred in the city’s North Ward while officers were investigating a report of illegal firearms. The suspect, along with the officers, sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Officer Joseph Azcona, a five-year veteran, was shot and killed while still in his patrol car. The second officer was also wounded but in non-life-threatening condition. Additional individuals were taken into custody for questioning. The 14-year-old suspect was facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and illegal weapons possession. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy called for prayers for the officers and their families, as well as all law enforcement officials. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka condemned the shooting and emphasized the need to prevent young individuals from possessing firearms and engaging in violence. The state attorney general’s office was monitoring the situation, and officials expressed frustration at the ongoing issue of youth violence. Baraka stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of such incidents and working collectively to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
