North Dakota legislators contemplating revisions to term limits

A Senate Concurrent Resolution in North Dakota is proposing changes to term limits for lawmakers. If passed, the resolution would limit the election of the Governor or Lieutenant Governor to two terms, while other positions such as Ag Commissioner, Attorney General, and State Auditor would be limited to three terms. The resolution also includes limits for members of the House and Senate, as well as statewide elected offices. It stipulates that any prior election before the 2018 general election would not count towards an individual’s term limit. The resolution also clarifies that time served as Lieutenant Governor in the capacity of President of the Senate would not count towards time served in the Senate. The resolution, if approved, would have a significant impact on the longevity of elected officials in North Dakota. Copyright 2025 KVLY. All rights reserved.
