Noem team denies ‘fake news’ claims of $650K spending on credit card, clarifies actual amount spent was $2K

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s legal team has issued a cease-and-desist letter to a South Dakota media outlet, The Dakota Scout, demanding that they correct false and misleading reports about her alleged expenses on a government-issued credit card during her time as governor. Reports claimed that Noem had racked up over $650,000 in charges, but receipts reviewed by Fox News Digital showed that she only spent $2,056.72 on her government credit card. The Dakota Scout has continued to publish reports claiming the higher amount, leading to the demand for correction.

The outlet had filed an open records lawsuit against the state auditor to obtain credit card expenditure information for Noem’s office, resulting in the false reporting. Despite Noem’s office requesting corrections to previous reports, The Dakota Scout brushed off the requests, leading to the legal action.

The outlet’s coverage on the expenses was mainly authored by journalists Ellis and Austin Goss, the latter of whom previously made national headlines for impersonating Noem in a prank call in 2023. Goss was fired from his job at Dakota News Now and pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct charges for the incident.

Noem’s legal team has also planned to send similar cease-and-desist letters to other outlets that have reported inaccurately on her credit card expenses. The original article on Fox News Digital highlighted the discrepancies in reporting and the legal steps taken by Noem’s team to address the false claims.
