Israel launches airstrike in Gaza, resulting in deaths of 2 amidst efforts to extend ceasefire

Two Palestinians were killed in a recent Israeli airstrike in Rafah, southern Gaza, as ceasefire talks continue between Israel and Hamas. The strike targeted a drone that had crossed into Gaza, as well as suspects attempting to collect it. This comes after another Israeli drone strike in Gaza killed two suspects the day before, leading to accusations of militants planting explosives in the area.

Hamas is currently engaging in ceasefire talks in Cairo with Egyptian and Qatari mediators, aiming to move towards the second phase of the deal which could potentially end the war. The group has expressed readiness for negotiations and called for efforts to aid the people of Gaza and lift the blockade imposed on them by Israel.

The ceasefire deal that began in January requires the release of 59 remaining hostages held by Hamas in exchange for an end to the war. So far, Hamas has released some hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and detainees. Israel has imposed a blockade on Gaza to pressure Hamas to release the remaining hostages, believing that many may not still be alive.

The conflict in Gaza has resulted in a high number of casualties and displacements, with Palestinians accusing Israel of genocide and war crimes. The assault began in October 2023 after a raid by Hamas-led fighters in southern Israel, leading to significant casualties and hostages being taken.
