North Dakota House rejects proposals to change endorsement process – InForum

The North Dakota House of Representatives failed to address concerns over the state’s endorsement and primary election process on the last day before crossover this session. The issue revolves around candidates skipping district endorsing conventions due to hostility and still making it onto the primary ballot, leading to unelectable candidates being endorsed.

House Bill 1446 aimed to require candidates to gather signatures to be placed on the primary ballot, while House Bill 1424 wanted only one candidate per political party on a primary ballot. Both bills failed to pass, with supporters arguing for better representation and opponents claiming it would remove power from the state parties.

Despite the lack of resolution, the North Dakota GOP Party Chair acknowledged the concerns and vowed to address them before the 2026 midterm elections. The debate in the House saw representatives divided on how to address the issue, with the fate of the state’s election process still uncertain.
