A recent crackdown on online scam centers has resulted in over 7,000 individuals from around the world being held in a Myanmar border town awaiting repatriation. These individuals are victims who were lured under false pretenses to work in scam centers in countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. Many find themselves trapped in virtual slavery, financially exploiting people through false romances, bogus investment schemes, and illegal gambling operations.
The crackdown, coordinated among Thailand, Myanmar, and China, follows Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s visit to Beijing where she promised to take action against scam networks. Thailand has cut off electricity, internet, and gas supplies to several areas in Myanmar hosting scam centers, citing national security concerns.
The unprecedented number of victims awaiting repatriation is straining the resources of Thailand, with concerns about a possible humanitarian crisis. Officials from the three countries are expected to meet to address the logistics of the crackdown and establish guidelines for repatriations.
Amy Miller, of aid group Acts of Mercy International, based in Thailand, believes the task of processing, housing, and feeding the victims would be impossible for most governments without global cooperation. Logistical issues such as verifying identities have complicated and slowed down repatriation efforts.
Over half of the 7,000 individuals waiting are Chinese, with the rest from various countries. Thailand has allowed China to handle the processing of the Chinese individuals returning home. Earlier this month, hundreds of individuals from 20 countries, trafficked to Myanmar through Mae Sot, were repatriated. The situation has drawn attention to the need for a coordinated global response to combat human trafficking and online scams.
