Elementary students at Dakota Prairie in Nelson County, North Dakota were surprised with the news that they had been named Group Volunteers of the Year by the North Dakota Long Term Care Association. The students, who participate in a volunteer program with the Nelson County Health System, were honored during an assembly at the school. The program, which has been in place for 20 years, expanded to three days a week following the COVID-19 pandemic. The students spend time engaging with residents at the Nelson County Health System Care Center through reading, singing, dancing, and other activities. Dakota Prairie, a consolidated school system serving students from preschool through 6th grade, is located in McVille, North Dakota. The Nelson County Health System Care Center, which currently has 32 residents, is located across the street from the elementary school. The partnership between the school and the care center demonstrates the positive impact of intergenerational interaction on the community.
