The U.S. Postal Service has decided to retain local mail processing operations at the Dakota Central facility in Huron, South Dakota, following advocacy efforts by Senator Mike Rounds. This decision reverses a previous plan to downsize the facility, which would have resulted in slower delivery times for South Dakotans. Senator Rounds expressed satisfaction with the USPS’s revised decision and highlighted the importance of maintaining rural postal services in the state.
In addition to keeping local processing in Huron, the USPS will invest up to $3 million in improvements at the Dakota Central facility to enhance mail processing efficiencies. Senator Rounds has been a strong advocate for preserving rural USPS services and recently introduced the Postal Processing Protection Act to ensure that rural areas are considered during closure or downsizing reviews.
The Senator’s efforts have led to a positive outcome for South Dakota, with the USPS pausing downsizing plans for both Huron and Sioux Falls. Senator Rounds looks forward to continuing to work with USPS leadership to sustain and improve mail delivery services in the state.
