Justice Department informs judges that it cannot meet court-ordered deadline to release frozen aid funding

In a court filing, the Trump administration stated that it could not meet a deadline set by a federal judge to release foreign aid funding. They claimed that it would take “weeks” to free up the approximately $2 billion owed, despite having been directed to do so nearly two weeks prior. The judge had set the deadline after aid groups and businesses argued that the State Department and US Agency for International Development were not complying with an order to lift a freeze on foreign aid. The judge rejected the government’s request for an extension and criticized their lack of action to comply. The aid groups argued that the freeze had caused them significant financial and operational issues. The government claims they have conducted individualized assessments of over 12,000 grants and terminated over 10,000 of them. The aid groups dispute this, calling it improbable and have requested for the Secretary of State Marco Rubio to testify in the case. This marks the second time that a judge has found the administration to be non-compliant with a court order, raising concerns about their adherence to legal directives. Despite these issues, President Trump stated that his administration would follow court orders and appeal any decisions.
