Lewis M Cowardin, a renowned wildlife biologist, passed away on 2-15-2025 at St Benedict’s Care Center in St. Cloud, MN. Born on 7-30-1933 in Pittsfield, MA, Cowardin had an illustrious career working for the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center for 30 years. He was recognized for his groundbreaking research in waterfowl biology, habitat management, and wetlands classification, publishing over 55 scientific articles. His contributions earned him prestigious awards, including the US Dept. of the Interior Secretary’s Stewardship Award of Science and Technology. Apart from his professional achievements, Cowardin was also known for his dedication to family, hockey coaching, and passion for music and woodworking. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A celebration of life is planned for the summer, and memorial donations can be made to The Wildlife Society. Cowardin’s legacy in the field of wildlife biology will continue to inspire future generations.
