InForum – North Dakota residents band together to host state-wide ‘Read Outs’

A nonpartisan group of citizens and parents in North Dakota is organizing local “Read Outs” to protest a bill in the state legislature that they believe targets library content. Right to Read ND, formed to fight censorship and protect the freedom to read, is hosting these events where North Dakotans are invited to read silently outside their local libraries. The bill in question, SB 2307, would require explicit material to be made inaccessible to children, sparking concerns among librarians about potential restrictions and legal implications. Despite over 150 testimonies submitted in opposition to the bill, the state Senate passed it, and now it is set to be considered by the state House. Right to Read ND is using these Read Outs as a way to show frustration with legislators not listening to their concerns. For more information about the group and the events, visit righttoreadnd.org.
