A Delta Air Lines flight, Flight 876, had to return to Atlanta shortly after takeoff due to a reported “possible smoke” in the aircraft. The plane was supposed to be headed to Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina but had to land back in Atlanta after only 35 minutes. The flight crew followed procedures and passengers could be seen covering their mouths and noses in a video showing smoke in the cabin. There were 94 passengers, two pilots, and three flight attendants onboard. Slides were deployed for evacuation upon landing and Atlanta Fire Rescue assisted in the deplaning of all passengers. Another video showed passengers standing on the sidelines of the runway following the evacuation. The incident had a moderate impact on airport operations. This is the second smoke-related issue to impact a Delta flight in a week, with another flight returning to Los Angeles International Airport due to smoke in the galley. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating both incidents. Delta Air Lines apologized for the experience and stated that safety is their top priority.
