Judge halts Trump administration’s attempt to end DEI-related grants

A federal judge in Maryland has blocked the Trump administration from terminating federal grants and contracts related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) as mandated in executive orders signed by President Trump. U.S. District Judge Adam Abelson ruled that the Termination Provision in the orders could lead to arbitrary and discriminatory enforcement over billions of dollars in government funding. The ruling prevents the administration from requiring federal contractors and grant recipients to certify that they do not engage in any programs related to equity, as the term was found to be too vague. Judge Abelson raised concerns about the potential consequences of broadly defining “equity-related” programs, such as jeopardizing funding for schools teaching about sensitive historical topics like Jim Crow laws. The court decision also prohibits the Justice Department from taking enforcement actions against contractors and grant recipients involved in such programs. The White House did not provide immediate comment following the ruling.
