Norwegian Author Explores North Dakota for Research

Renowned Norwegian historian and author, Thor Gotaas, recently visited Minot to learn more about the time that Sondre Norheim, known as the father of modern skiing, spent in North Dakota. Norheim immigrated to the US in 1884 and settled in McHenry County after a brief stay in Minnesota. Gotaas, commissioned by Kviteseid, Norheim’s hometown, to write a book in honor of the skier’s 200th birth anniversary, has a background in folklore and history, having been inspired by his grandfather’s stories. Gotaas, who started skiing at the age of 2 and has written over 50 books on Norwegian history and culture, aims to preserve and share the rich heritage of his country. The visit to Minot was part of his research on Norheim’s life and legacy. Gotaas’ dedication to preserving the history and traditions of Norway mirrors Norheim’s passion for skiing and storytelling.
