In a recent groundbreaking national survey released by PRRI in 2024, the support for Christian nationalism in all 50 states was estimated for the first time. The survey interviewed over 22,000 adults as part of the PRRI American Values Atlas to monitor the spread of support for Christian nationalism and the factors influencing such views. The survey revealed that three in ten Americans qualified as Christian nationalism Adherents or Sympathizers. These percentages have remained stable since the questions were first asked in late 2022.
The survey highlighted that partisanship, media consumption, age, and education levels are linked to Christian nationalism support, with Republicans, far-right TV news sources viewers, and older, less-educated individuals more likely to align with Christian nationalist beliefs. Support for Christian nationalism is also strongly correlated with white evangelical Protestants and Hispanic Protestants, as well as church attendance.
States in the South and Midwest had higher levels of support for Christian nationalism, with a strong correlation between support for Christian nationalism and the vote for President Donald Trump in the 2024 election. Christian nationalists were found to hold distinct views on the outcome of the 2024 presidential race, showing high confidence in Trump’s victory and the strength of democracy.
Moreover, Christian nationalists were more likely to hold extreme views about immigrants, subscribe to patriarchal beliefs, and support political violence and QAnon views. The survey revealed that support for political violence, potential belief in QAnon conspiracy theories, and extreme views on gender roles were significantly higher among Christian nationalism Adherents and Sympathizers than Skeptics and Rejecters. The survey methodology ensured a representative sample and provided valuable insights into the prevalence of Christian nationalism across the United States and its intersection with various attitudes and demographics.
