Northern U.S. hit by heavy snow and freezing temperatures from winter storm systems

Two storm systems are expected to bring more snow and rain to the northern United States this week. The first storm will hit the Plains on Monday, with Kansas expected to receive heavy snow. On Tuesday, the storm will move eastward, affecting the Appalachian and mid-Atlantic regions, as well as parts of the Northeast. The next storm system is predicted to arrive on Wednesday, bringing widespread rain and snow to the Plains and Midwest before moving into the Northeast.

Arctic air is predicted to drop temperatures up to 40 degrees below average across the Plains and Rockies. Montana and the Dakotas are expected to experience the coldest temperatures, with wind chills as low as negative-40 degrees. Some cities in the Northwest, such as Seattle and Portland, could also see record lows.

The cold temperatures are expected to continue through the third week of February, according to the National Weather Service. In the Northeast, over 230 flights have been canceled due to the severe weather, although winter alerts have been dropped as the storm moves off the coast. Forecasters predict that temperatures will remain colder than usual in the northern United States over the next one to two weeks.
