Trump fires chief of the National Archives

President Donald Trump has dismissed the head of the National Archives, Colleen Shogan, who was involved in a criminal case accusing him of mishandling classified documents. The White House official announced the dismissal, stating that the president directed it. Shogan acknowledged the termination in a LinkedIn post, expressing pride in her service. Trump had previously stated his intention to fire Shogan and appoint a new archivist. The National Archives alerted the Justice Department in 2022 about Trump’s failure to return requested records after leaving office, leading to a criminal investigation. Trump eventually returned some records but kept others, leading to a search of his residence and a criminal case that was eventually dismissed on procedural grounds. Since taking office, the Trump administration has dismissed officials involved in investigations against the president, including career lawyers and senior FBI officials. Two groups of FBI agents have sued the DOJ, alleging they were targeted for dismissal.
