DOGE temporarily barred from accessing sensitive Treasury Department payment systems by federal judge

A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking political appointees, special government employees, and those detailed from other agencies from accessing sensitive Treasury Department data, including Social Security numbers and confidential financial information. This decision came after 19 state attorneys general sued the government over claims that Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staff had no authority to access this information. Those who had previous access were ordered to destroy any downloaded material. A hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 14 to address a preliminary injunction. The White House and Department of Justice did not immediately comment on the matter. In a separate case in Washington, union members and retirees also sued the government for violating privacy laws by allowing DOGE staff to access Treasury data. The Trump administration agreed to restrict all but two DOGE staff members from accessing the sensitive information. Marko Elez, one of the two allowed access, resigned after being linked to a controversial social media account. Vice President JD Vance defended Elez, and Elon Musk promised to reinstate him.
