Three bills introduced to combat overcrowding in North Dakota jails and address issues within the justice system.

North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Director Colby Braun has suggested eliminating fees for people on supervised release to reduce overcrowding in jails and prisons. Three bills addressing jail overcrowding, diversion, and reentry were presented to lawmakers, aiming to keep low-level criminals out of the justice system. House Bill 1425 focuses on diversion and deflection, House Bill 1417 eliminates fees for those on supervised release, and House Bill 1549 creates a grant program for reentry programs in local jails. Representative Lawrence Klemin, the sponsor of the bills, believes that these proposals will improve public safety by focusing on reentry, recovery, and rehabilitation. However, some opposition to the bills was voiced during committee work. The bills aim to address the shortage of beds in North Dakota jails and promote behavioral health investments to reduce reliance on jails and prisons. The bills are still under consideration by the House Judiciary Committee, with a decision expected by Monday.
