Governor of Maryland dismisses three state board of morticians members in wake of crematory scandal

Governor Wes Moore of Maryland has removed three members of the Maryland Board of Morticians and Funeral Directors following reports of failures at a Charles County crematory. The board’s president Michelle Kutta, as well as the first and second vice presidents Brandon Wylie and Patrick Thompson, have resigned in the aftermath of the scandal. The governor has hired an outside law firm to conduct a comprehensive review of the board’s operations.

The Heaven Bound Cremation Services crematory in Charles County came under scrutiny after 18 bodies were found improperly stored, with three decomposing. Despite issues dating back to 2017, the facility continued to operate until recently. Concerns have been raised that families may have received incorrect ashes following the closure of the crematory.

The owners of Heaven Bound, Rosa and Brandon Williams, have not been reachable for comment. In response to the situation, the Maryland House of Delegates Health and Government Operations Committee has scheduled a briefing to further investigate the matter. Chair Del. Joseline Pena-Melnyk expressed the committee’s interest in understanding the reasons for the operational review and considering potential next steps to address the issue.
