The Maryland Department of Health is taking action after a recent investigation by The Washington Post revealed abusive and mismanagement issues at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center, the state’s maximum security psychiatric hospital. The investigation found that the hospital failed to investigate violent staff assaults and sexual assaults against patients, as well as concerns about understaffing and dangerous conditions. The Department of Health is committed to the safety and security of both employees and patients, and has initiated a third-party evaluation of the facility. They are also recruiting a clinical director to provide oversight, conducting a nationwide search for a new CEO, and working with outside organizations to modernize practices. The hospital has faced complaints dating back to 2011, with allegations of patients not receiving proper medications and dangerous clinical decisions being made. A temporary restraining order was filed against the former CEO after employees alleged bullying and threats. An audit this summer also found that the hospital failed to properly dispose of highly controlled drugs. The Department of Health is dedicated to addressing these issues and ensuring a safe environment for all involved at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center.
