North Dakota House passes bill to cut funding for public broadcasting – InForum

North Dakota legislators in the House voted to remove state funding for public broadcasting with the passing of House Bill 1255. The bill, which would cease all state funding directly or indirectly supporting public broadcasting, received a vote of 61-32 in favor. Proponents of the bill argued that Prairie Public Broadcasting, the state’s largest public broadcasting organization, displayed editorial bias on abortion and questioned the necessity of state funding with the rise of charitable gambling revenue. On the other hand, opponents warned that cutting government funding could jeopardize vital programming and services provided by Prairie Public. The organization’s CEO, John Harris, emphasized their commitment to fact-based reporting and providing an open platform for diverse viewpoints. Additionally, concerns were raised about Prairie Public’s involvement in purchasing bar assets, with explanations provided by Director Deb McDaniel and Harris. The bill will need to undergo further review and a subsequent vote before advancing to the Senate.
