North Dakota House Decides to Stop Financial Support for Prairie Public Broadcasting

In a 61-32 vote, the North Dakota House members have decided to cut off the state’s funding for Prairie Public Broadcasting, despite a “do not pass” recommendation from the House Political Subdivisions committee. This decision comes as Prairie Public received nearly $1.5 million from the state in fiscal year 2023, accounting for less than 10% of its revenue. Republican Rep. Vicky Steiner supported the funding cut, citing concerns about the broadcaster’s alleged one-sided view on the abortion issue. On the other hand, Democrat Rep. LaurieBeth Hager argued that cutting funding could restrict access to information for some residents who may not be able to afford cable. Republican Rep. Jorin Johnson, who sponsored the bill, believes the state’s money would be better spent on education, health care, or infrastructure. The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration. This decision has sparked debates over the role of public broadcasting and the allocation of state funds in North Dakota.
