Conservative author Darren Beattie, known for spreading conspiracy theories and making inflammatory remarks, has been appointed to a top post at the State Department by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Beattie will serve as acting undersecretary of state for public diplomacy, pending Senate confirmation. In response to his appointment, Beattie announced he would suspend his involvement with his website, Revolver News.
Beattie has a history of controversial statements, including advocating for “competent white men” to be in charge and promoting conspiracy theories, such as the idea that the Jan. 6 Capitol attack was orchestrated by the FBI. Former President Trump has endorsed Beattie’s work and cited it as exposing false narratives about the attack.
Despite being fired from the Trump White House in 2018 for appearing at a conference with white nationalists, Beattie was later hired as a senior advisor by Rep. Matt Gaetz and appointed to a three-year term with the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad. The Biden administration requested his resignation from the unpaid post in 2022.
Beattie’s appointment has been met with criticism, with the Anti-Defamation League calling it “outrageous.” However, supporters of Beattie, including Revolver News, have praised the move as a blow to critics who label him a conspiracy theorist. Beattie has indicated that he is eager to work with his colleagues in the State Department to advance President Trump’s agenda.
