Vincent Lemark Burrell, a Georgia man, was sentenced to 475 years in prison for facilitating dog fights and animal abuse. In November 2022, 107 dogs were seized from his property in Dallas, Georgia. The dogs showed signs of abuse, including being underweight and lacking food, water, and shelter. Some were restrained with logging chains, a tactic used to build dog aggression. Evidence at Burrell’s property linked him to dog fighting, including a treadmill for dogs, a breeding stand, and a break stick. The dogs were ultimately taken in by a nonprofit organization, Friends of the Forlorn Animal Rescue. One of the dogs found, Baby Shark, was intended for illegal fighting. Burrell was convicted by a jury on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals. He denied being involved in dog fighting in court. The case was launched after an Amazon delivery worker reported the condition of the dogs on Burrell’s property. Burrell’s attorney did not immediately respond to a voicemail message, and it is unclear whether he will appeal the sentence. Superior Court Judge Dean C. Bucci sentenced Burrell to the maximum amount allowed by law, making it the longest known sentence involving dog fighting.
