North Dakota Lawmakers Contemplate Broadening Tax Credit Aimed at Seniors • North Dakota Monitor

House Bill 1335 proposes changes to the homestead property tax credit in North Dakota, allowing more residents to qualify for property tax relief. The bill would lower the qualifying age from 65 to 62, increase the income threshold for eligibility, and eliminate property taxes on a portion of a homeowner’s primary residence based on income level.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Nels Christianson, aims to align tax policy with the retirement age and provide needed relief to residents who may not currently qualify for the credit. Christianson argues that retirees should not be burdened with high property taxes after years of paying other taxes.

The House Finance and Taxation Committee is reviewing the bill, which could result in $85.3 million in state reimbursements to local governments over two years. If passed, the changes would benefit many North Dakotans and offer financial relief to those on fixed incomes. By expanding eligibility for the homestead property tax credit, the state aims to support retirees and ensure they can remain in their homes without facing excessive property tax burdens.
